This stunning map by the legendary American mapmaker S.A. Mitchell is a steel plate lithograph, hand-colored in reds, greens and yellows. This particular year, 1860, represents one of the finest Mitchell maps made, as it is exceptionally large with an especially magnificent border. It was originally part of the fantastic Mitchell’s General Atlas. This atlas is highly regarded because of its hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its size and detail. Mitchell’s maps are among the largest and most colorful 19^th century maps ever made.
